Understanding Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are not just about food — they are complex emotional and psychological struggles that often develop as ways to cope with deep distress, anxiety, trauma, or a need for control. They can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background.
If you are struggling with restrictive eating, bingeing, purging, compulsive exercise, or constant thoughts about food and body image, you are not alone. These behaviours are symptoms of pain — not personal failure. They are signals that something deeper needs care and understanding.
Common types of eating disorders include:
-
Anorexia Nervosa – characterized by restriction of food intake and intense fear of weight gain
-
Bulimia Nervosa – cycles of binge eating followed by purging or other compensatory behaviours
-
Binge Eating Disorder – recurrent episodes of consuming large amounts of food accompanied by shame or loss of control
-
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED) – disordered eating patterns that don’t fit one category but cause significant distress
How Therapy Helps
Eating disorder therapy focuses on healing the underlying emotional and relational issues that drive disordered eating. Through compassionate and non-judgmental support, you can begin to understand your relationship with food, body image, and self-worth — and start rebuilding a more peaceful, balanced connection with yourself.
In counselling, we work to:
-
Understand the roots of the disorder — such as perfectionism, trauma, shame, or unmet emotional needs
-
Develop emotional awareness — learn to identify and regulate difficult emotions without turning to harmful coping patterns
-
Challenge distorted beliefs — explore and gently shift unhelpful thoughts about food, body, and control
-
Build a positive body image — work toward acceptance and compassion for your body at every stage of recovery
-
Rebuild trust and connection — strengthen relationships with yourself and others as you recover
Therapeutic approaches such as Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness-Based interventions can all support recovery from eating disorders. Therapy may also complement medical or nutritional treatment when needed.
A Safe Space for Healing
Recovery is not about willpower — it’s about understanding, compassion, and healing. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you reach out. Whether you are in early recovery, struggling with relapse, or simply exploring your relationship with food and your body, therapy offers a space to feel heard, supported, and understood.
